A damaged coin is much less attractive to a buyer than one which is without blemishes, which can command a substantial premium.  You must realize that more than age goes into determining the worth of a given coin. The value of a coin depends on many factors besides just how old and how rare it may be. The market value of a coin is largely determined by demand for it.

Moisture can cause problems just like fingerprints and dust can, so even though most holders are sufficient to protect your Sacagawea dollars make sure your most valuable pieces are really protected.  Stapled or taped containers don’t protect very well, but there are other options available that can also block moisture. When selecting a storage space for your collectible coins, make sure they are not in an area given to dampness, such as a cellar or basement.
If possible, steer clear of handling your coins. Dust, scratches, fingerprints and moisture will affect the quality of your coins and depreciate their value.  Refrain from direct contact with your coins, especially mint condition ones, but necessary handling should always be done by only touching the rim of the coin and never the center.
