Pot Addiction and how to beat it

Author + July 16th, 2008 + no replies

Scientists have learned a copious amount about how THC acts in the brain to produce its many consequences. When someone uses marijuana, THC rapidly passes from the lungs into the blood, which takes the chemical to different organs throughout the body, including the brain.

In the brain, THC attaches to distinctive spots termed ‘cannabinoid receptors’ on nerve cells and affects the activity of those cells. Some brain areas have many cannabinoid receptors; others have few or none. Many cannabinoid receptors are discovered in the parts of the brain that control gratification, memory, intellectual thought, concentration, sensory and time perception, and coordinated movement.

The short-term effects of marijuana can consist of difficulties with memory recall and learning, distorted awareness, complications in thinking and problem-solving, loss of coordination and increased heart rate. Research findings for long-term marijuana abuse indicate some changes in the brain similar to those seen after long-term misuse of other major drugs.
