Beating Heroin Addiction

Author + July 16th, 2008 + no replies

After an infusion of heroin, the user reports going through a surge of euphoria (”rush”) accompanied by a warm reddening of the skin, a dry mouth, and heavy extremities. Following this preliminary euphoria, the user goes “on the nod” - an alternately sleepless and drowsy state. Mental operation becomes hazy due to the depression of the central nervous system.

Long-term effects of heroin use become visible after recurring use for some time of time. Chronic abusers may grow collapsed veins, infection of the heart lining and valves, ulcers, cellulitis, and liver disease. Pulmonary complications, including numerous sorts of pneumonia, may result from the poor health state of the abuser, as well as from heroin’s inhibiting effects on respiration.
