South central Iowa tourism always reminds me of my camping days in the area. We were there in the spring of the year and it was just the right time for the mushrooms to start popping out of the ground. We stumbled across a few right next to our camping site and that gave us the bug to go hunting. We found no other mushrooms in the campground, a fact we attribute to the fact that other campers must have already picked them. We choose what we thought was the least traveled trail through the woods and we took off. Before long we found a few small ones just poking out from under the leaves. When we found an area where there was a sunny hillside with lots of old fallen trees we hit the jackpot. I sent the wife back to the camper for our stash of grocery bags and I started filling the one small bag we had brought with us. There were some super large mushrooms that you couldn’t miss and there were some barely the size of my thumb. When the wife returned we cleaned the place out and headed back to the camper with each of us carrying two filled grocery bags.

I’ve never been a big fan of the typical beauty pageant scene. Sure, I like watching the swimsuit part on television, just like every other guy on the planet, but I really don’t see the point. Girls compete in a “beauty pageant” for what exactly? To be recognized as beautiful and important? Furthermore, where in the world does the swimsuit part fit in? This is totally there to encourage men to watch. That’s my opinion anyway.
But hey, it certainly works. Anyway, I once dated a girl who was completely consumed with the beauty pageant process. She was destined to become Miss USA. Not miss America.
